Anniston Fire Department Embraces Proactive Technology Solutions

General Informatics empowers the Anniston Fire Department with innovative, proactive technology solutions designed to advance public safety and streamline operations.
Anniston Fire

The City of Anniston Fire Department, located in Alabama, is dedicated to protecting lives and property through efficient emergency response and public education.

Despite being a vital part of the community, the department faced challenges due to outdated support systems and inadequate communication tools. These technology issues were not just inconveniences but potential risks, affecting their ability to respond promptly and effectively to emergencies.

Project Highlights

Best-in-class video conferencing tools: 10-foot video wall central to the Training Center
Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) System: Integrated a CAD system to provide live updates during emergency situations.
Enhanced Connectivity Between Stations: Improved the communication infrastructure to ensure seamless connectivity among the 5 fire stations across Anniston.
Information Dashboards: Flat-screen dashboards in common areas displaying department news, important updates, and relevant data.

For years, the Anniston Fire Department contended with a slow and reactive support system that often took up to three weeks to receive responses to their concerns, causing delays and inefficiencies in operations. Additionally, the previous support provider failed to anticipate the department’s needs, leading to a lack of strategic planning and preparedness. This situation was untenable, especially for an emergency service where every second counts.

Recognizing the severity of these issues, our team stepped in to offer a comprehensive and forward-thinking solution designed to enhance the operational capacity of the Anniston Fire Department. Our approach was rooted in personalized, proactive support tailored to meet the unique demands of the fire department.

Best-in-class technology for a World Class Training Center

From 38 states across the U.S. to Europe and South Korea, the City of Anniston Fire Department serves its community and international guests with advanced fire certifications at its world class training center.  The demand for these advanced certifications meant the need for an expanded training center.

General Informatics stepped in as the trusted IT partner during the building of the new training center. By keeping technology needs at the forefront, time and money were saved by implementing the appropriate data drops, monitors, cabling, and more during the construction.

The Anniston Regional Training Center, now doubled in size, features state-of-the-art technology including interactive meeting room displays, additional monitors, and HD cameras and audio equipment. This forward-thinking approach was crucial during the COVID pandemic when many of the classes transitioned to an online format.

“We're lightyears ahead of where we were when it comes to technology being reliable and responsive. When there's issues or problems, it gets corrected quickly, where before it was a hassle.”

Enhancing Collaboration and Communication Across Departments

For this growing city, connectivity and communication between the stations remains a top priority.

By partnering with General Informatics, the department could seamlessly upgrade all trucks with advanced Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and Cradlepoint wireless networks to provide reliable connection and live updates during emergency situations.

With a CAD system, dispatched trucks can immediately see caller information and automatically record data on the scene, a far change from the inaccuracy of manual reporting. An integrated CAD system ensures all units are informed and can coordinate effectively, significantly reducing response times.  Combined with wireless access, these systems increase the accuracy of emergency reports and reduce the time needed to complete administrative tasks.

Across the five stations in Anniston, live dashboards were installed in common areas to display department news, important updates, and relevant information. These dashboards seamlessly transition to live data during incoming calls, showcasing incident details, GPS data, weather conditions, and routes to enable swift action.

"We used to have to write all of this down when we got back to the station. Now with response times, we know exactly when a truck got on scene. Without the IT support we get on these trucks, none of that would be possible."

Operations Chief,  Anniston Fire Department

The Anniston Fire Department has continued to grow in their technology needs, recently implementing Microsoft Teams for cloud-based file sharing and communication to enhance collaboration.

Reflecting on these updated communication tools, Chief Johnnie Phelps said “It sounds simple, but these are awesome communication tools so there is no excuse to not know what’s going on in the department.”

The City of Anniston Fire Department serves as an example of how proactive, personalized support and advanced technology can redefine operational efficiency and effectiveness. By addressing challenges with targeted solutions, General Informatics has enhanced service delivery, ensuring they remain at the forefront of emergency response, equipped with the best tools and support to protect their community.
